What’s a Sustainable Foodie?

A sustainable foodie is a term that has been around for quite some, but might be a little confusing to the untrained eye.


In 2018, Food Tribe launched our RadicALL campaign to raise awareness around just what it means to make sustainable choices with your food.


While there appear to be multiple definitions, what Food Tribe has been able to discover is that a sustainable foodie is someone who’s interested in “food balance.”

Ethically and responsible food which minimizes waste and impact on people and planet.

Foodies every where are creating change by making choices wiht their pocketbooks!

Sustainable food trends everywhere have impacted food from the farm, to your grocery store, to your favorite restaurant through the actions of sustainable foodies everywhere.



Which Type of Sustinable Foodie Are you?




Sustainable foodie characteristics:

  • Animals: Healthy animals, safe living conditions, humane treatment

  • Economics: Financing operations who support workers rights, focused on the triple bottom line.

  • Waste: Avoiding waste at all costs. Leaving no materials on this planet that can’t be trace free.

  • Agriculture + Sustainability: Systems designed to make the best use of landspace, protecting important ecosystems that allow the healthy recovery of the planet.

  • The Ocean and the Air: Two systems paramount to the continued existence of our planet. Sustainable foodies make food choices which ensure the healing of our planet.

  • People: Are the caretakers of this planet. If yhtey don’t have what they need to protect it, why are we hear? Sustainable foodies make food choices that help ensure lasting prosperity for their neighbors.

  • Local Focus with a Global Twist: Understanding the importance of local systems to support an international food system.



As this growing trend of though leaders continues to expand, the choices on your plate will start to reflect the knowledge and truth being discovered by agriculturalists, scientists, restaurants, grocery storers and the different food influencers you engage with.

To understand WHY sustainable food is becoming such a trending topic, we should really look to the United Nations.


The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Its Impact on Foodies Everywhere

The United Nations is an organization designed to help increase cooperation between our global governments.

While we’re all citizens of the country’s that we reside in, something to remember is that we are all also citizens of this planet earth.

So when it comes to food, the United Nations is an important player in the way country’s like the United States, France, Mexico and Brasil start the process of implementing food policy in their countries.

Food policy represents the infrastructure and rules that dictate the way we produce, harvest, distribute and dispose of food - and seeks to protect the different stakeholders like farmers, restaurants, and foodies.

Which is why the United Nations is so important.


The UN has the tough job of showing countries that regardless of what they’d like to see as individuals, certain decisions must be made to ensure that the things that are best for HUMANS, is put before any single nation.

The 2020 UN Sustainable Development goals outline some of those areas.

They’re a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 for the year 2030.


The SDGs are part of Resolution 70/1 of the United Nations General Assembly, the 2030 Agenda


  • Goal 2: Zero Hunger

  • Goal 3: Health

  • Goal 5: Gender equality and women’s empowerment

  • Goal 6: Water and Sanitation

  • Goal 7: Energy

  • Goal 8: Economic Growth

  • Goal 9: Infrastructure, industrialization

  • Goal 11: Cities

  • Goal 12: Sustainable consumption and production

  • Goal 13: Climate Change

  • Goal 14: Oceans

  • Goal 15: Biodiversity, forests, desertification

  • Goal 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions

  • Goal 17: Partnerships




At the International Level, then National Governments, Then Eventually Your Plate

If current growth trends persist, global warming is likely to reach 1.5°C between 2030 and 2052.

Since 1993, the Earth’s mean sea level has been rising 3.2mm a year.


If the world’s population climbs above 9.5bn in 2050 and lifestyles are not altered, the natural resources needed to supply humanity will equate to almost three planet earths.


Which means that:

  • There won’t be a place for you and your kids to enjoy your favorite foods

  • A lot of the foods you know and love might not be available

  • Eventually, we’ll hit a place where everyone you know and love doesn’t have a place to exist anymore


Which is why Food Tribe is committed to ensuring a happy, healthier planet for everyone.

In 2020 Then Mapping the Next 10 Years

According to the United Nations, the earth is in dire turmoil: our planet is suffering due to human interference.

We risk the extinction and eradication of several of earths most important species.

There’s an awful lot of awful in the just-released summary of a new U.N. report on biodiversity and ecosystem.

According to Time:

“There’s the tenfold increase in plastic pollution since 1980, for example.

There’s the 400 million tons of heavy metals, toxic sludge and fertilizer runoff poured into the world’s water each year too.

There’s the doubling of greenhouse gas emissions since 1980; the growth of industrial fishing, now sprawling across 55% of the world’s oceans, the 85% loss of the wetlands since the dawn of the industrial era, and the 70% increase in invasive species in 21 countries.”


The Time article doesn’t end there:

“And then, finally, and perhaps most worrying are the extinctions.

According to the conclusions of the 455 experts and contributing authors from 50 countries who drafted the report for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), up to 1 million species of plants and animals are now threatened with extinction, some within decades, including 40% of all amphibians, 33% of marine mammals, and another 33% of shark, shark relatives and reef-forming corals.”


Businesses, NGO’s and Individuals Come Together to Enact UN Policy

MAINTAIN INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND SECURITY

PROTECT HUMAN RIGHTS

DELIVER HUMANITARIAN AID

PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Which is why several stakeholders need to come together in order to help make a difference. Outside of our governments, it becomes the responsibility of the planets citizens - private citizens, businesses and non-governmental organizations, need to come together to create a lasting solution.

NGO’s

Non governmental organizations work in between the private and public sectors in order to make achieving the SDG’s a reality.

Understanding human behavior and keeping the mission alive through working with all stakeholders to keep this planet alive and going.

Business

More and more companies are signing on to reach the SDGs through corporate actions such as reducing water, curtailing emissions, enacting better labor practices and more.

One key way to scale corporate social and environmental programs is to partner with organizations that are already building traction

Private Citizens

Average people every where are coming together in order to make the UN’s SDG’s a reality.

Ending extreme poverty, fighting inequality, solving problems for injustice, and fixing climate change.

These important, world-changing objectives will require cooperation among governments, international organizations and world leaders.

The thing is, governments, organizations and world leaders are in business to serve the people, animals and resources available to this planet - which means the average person can have a huge impact.
