In honor of Food Tribe’s upcoming Radic(ALL) event and campaign, we are putting the spotlight on a few incredible people who are changing the world. Sustainability itself isn’t sustainable, and in order to reverse a lot of the bad trends and habits the food industry has developed, we all need to be more aware of the issues. We all need to rethink what it means to create a sustainable food industry.


In a word, we all need to be more radical.

November 28th, 2018 - One of the most common questions we are encountering when it comes to the Radic(ALL) campaign is some form of, “how do i become part of the solution as opposed to the problem?” There are many ways to reduce your foodprint and improve the current food sustainability situation, and it doesn’t have to be as grandiose as some of the fine people you are about to read about. It can start with something as simple as cooking your own meals or prioritizing local, seasonal foods over processed alternatives.

London’s Coffeepreneurs

The UK loves its coffee about as much as America does (how does 55 million cups per day sound?)

When you drink your coffee, you don’t often think about the negative implications that harmless cup of joe had on the world. Without caffeine-shaming anybody, it’s worth noting that behind all of those cups of coffee exists tons of hot grounds of coffee shipped straight to a landfill. Many coffee beans can be used as garden compost, but that just isn’t scalable enough when you need to account for 55 million daily cups.

What’s being done to counter this? Optiat is a cosmetics company that now hand-sources excess arabica from many of London’s most wonderful cafes and restaurants. They then combine the antioxidant, exfoliating powers with essential oils such as lemongrass or mint in order to create body scrubs. Coffee has the same acidity level as your skin, so the caffeine helps increase blood flow to improve eczema, acne and other skin conditions.

Then you have Sundried - the coffee activewear company! These fine people use coffee grounds to create quick-drying and deodorising athletic wear that creates fewer CO2 emissions in the manufacturing process since the yarn is of higher quality. No, you won’t walk around smelling like a sweaty frappuccino.

CRU Kafe is killing it as well. One of the biggest issues in the coffee industry is the way coffee farming wastes tons of coffee cherries. The bean surrounding the harvested beans can be used to make cascara, a type of fruity tea typical of countries like Bolivia and Colombia. The issue is that this drink isn’t popular enough worldwide, so its impact on tackling waste is minimal.

CRU Kafe now dries the coffee cherries in order to create their own unique coffee flour that is higher in protein than fresh kale! Now you’ll feel better about pouring all that sugar in your mug.


Milk And Eggs

Their macro goal is to eliminate food waste, trash, carbon delivery and carbon agriculture, which is something we can definitely get on board with. Have fun browsing their eclectic selection of delightful food items if you never want to go to the grocery store again.


Ernst Gotsch

Some people just seem like they are operating on an entirely different level. Ernst Gotsch is a Swiss farmer running his farm Olhos D’Agua (Tears in the Eyes) in Pirai do Norte in the South of Bahia, Brazil.


This ain’t your average farm, either. He doesn’t just have a few plants and crops. Gotsch has created an actual forest.


To get a better idea of what Ernst Gotsch is all about, this video titled Life in Syntropy will give you a better understanding of the positive impact he is having on sustainability at such a large scale. His decade-old farm is built upon an entirely new method of farming that he invented called “syntropic agriculture.”

Syntropy is a process that goes from simple to complex and Ernst’s farming follows the same logics, as all his actions help promote a positive energy balance in the system. There’s a refined set of principles behind his farming based on science-based knowledge and practical intelligence/sensibility. His work is systemized so it can be replicated anywhere regardless of climate or soil type. Sustainability itself has to be economic, social and environmental, and all of these aspects shine through in syntropic agriculture.

His students produce land that looks like an oasis in the middle of a wasteland. Ernst created a regenerative system that is profitable, and the objective is to restore soil through horticulture and fruit production. At the time of harvesting, the soil will be better than when it started because Ernst’s methods allow soil to be rehydrated or brought back to life, in a sense.

His way of doing this is by employing pruning methods. While enabling the soil to be more fertile and water-retentive, Ernst is able to make grass that functions in collaboration with the system. Pruning boosts the system’s metabolism to peak efficiency and sprouts plants that increase root activities, which promotes new metabolism thus producing the proper acids to make plants grow. It is all one beautiful symbiotic relationship.

Pruning also increases the rate of photosynthesis which allows more sunlight to be used to cool the environment. This creates more rain and ultimately drops overall temperatures, decreasing many of the negative effects of climate change.

Ernst put it so beautifully by stating that the goal is to create areas of permanent inclusion of humans as opposed to areas of permanent protection from humans

Large scale challenges require large scale solutions. Synoptic agriculture combined with systems where machinery can be integrated fixes a whole lot of problems.

People and companies who go the extra mile to make sure their success doesn’t come at the expense of the world around them is a beautiful thing. Food Tribe is proud to be hosting an event that showcases people who aren’t just dreaming about changing the world, but are actually doing it.

TOMS Roasting Co. launched in 2014, and has helped provide over 335,000 weeks of safe water in 6 countries. With each purchase of TOMS Roasting Co. Coffee, we work with our Giving Partners to provide 140 liters of safe water (a one week supply) to a person in need.
