#LAFoodCulture: DoughNOT Miss Out on Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee

I have a deeply personal story about the beauty that is Sidecar Doughnuts. Growing up on the East Coast and only being a newly-anointed Angeleno for a few years, I knew nothing other than Dunkin’ Donuts and the occasional Krispy Kreme. Fresh, homemade donuts were not something I had ever thought twice about.

And then...my world opened up. In LA and Orange County, I was clued into the glory of fresh, homemade donuts that put stale, week-old rings of sadness from Dunkin Donuts to shame. At first, I fell in love with places like M&M Donuts and the infamous Voodoo Doughnut.

While great in their own rights, walking into Sidecar for the first time was unlike any experience I’d ever had strolling into a donut shop. You are immediately smacked in the face by an unidentifiable smell that can only be described as an amalgamation of so many delicious and unique donut flavors.

Places like Sidecar are what make the #LAFoodCulture scene so special. You can find the best of everything and due to the nature of the city, there will always be a unique and tasty twist that you won’t find anywhere else.

The menu changes monthly and usually includes some festive flavors for the holidays. Traditional favorites include the cinnamon crumb and maple bacon, as well as a few others which you’ll soon find out about!

Food Tribe had the pleasure of hitting up Sidecar’s Santa Monica location with two lovely donut enthusiasts in Krystal and her son Easton, the Instagram famous 4-year-old foodie who knows what he loves and is not here for your basic food takes! His favorite foods are chimichangas, burgers, taquitos and sweet and sour chicken - not the typical response you’d expect from a kid that age.

The beautiful Santa Monica location is a perfect spot for both locals and tourists alike. Our two foodies went with some of Sidecar’s classic flavors in order to get a good idea of what the famed doughnut venue is all about. On the plates were the traditional glazed, the salt & butter doughnut, and the “Choc A Lot,” which has recently become a permanent fixture at both locations aside from being a monthly special.

You can never go wrong with a glazed, but Krystal loved the butter & salt donut, which I have also had the pleasure of trying in my own doughnut adventures. It’s unlike any doughnut you’ll find at the average donuttery, mainly because the salt is such a unique component. It gives it a slight bitterness that tastes so pleasant given the softness of the dough and velvety texture the butter adds.

“That sweet, salty savory taste was absolutely delicious, and they were still warm which was amazing,” she said.

Easton was all about the Choc A Lot. Why?

“Because it had chocolate.”

Isn’t that reason enough? He also loved the “chocolatey balls” on top, a term he so famously coined. Sidecar drapes the Choc A Lot with little bits of chocolate that are somewhere between a big sprinkle and a tiny hershey’s bar. It adds a fantastic texture to the already delectable doughnut.

Easton is probably a few years away from needing coffee, but when that day comes, Sidecar will also be the place to go for his caffeine fix. Sidecar is also proud to serve their very own signature coffee and espresso blends in collaboration with Portland's Stumptown Coffee Roasters.

Another thing to love about Sidecar Doughnuts - they support the community just like Food Tribe!

As part of their Sidecares program, every month Sidecar partners with a different charity or non-profit to donate a portion of their proceeds to the group as well as teaming up with them on specific initiatives, events, and/or anything else fun they might have going on.

Sidecar is the brainchild of a creative team brought together through a shared vision: creating a beautiful, new type of gathering place for their beloved community. The product exemplifies that love and passion, as the donuts are truly second to none.
